Research question :
Typography as an expression of culture
My project was to discover how culture and typography design interrelated.
This project is an experiment of expressing how different cultures in different ages can co- existed in design.
Typeface Design
Ancient hand drawing and modern with split letter style. It is used as an element of a design of poster and canvas bag.
The image on the left I used a photo I took in Athens as a background image because the Greek alphabet is a writing system that was developed about 800 BC and the foundation of most modern European alphabets. I used the font I designed and by cutting up letters and breaking up text in wavy shape to interact with the buildings and to respond to modern people at the bottom of this picture. I wasn’t concerned with legibility, I just wanted to emphasise on the flow of culture.
The image on the right I collected my drawings from this project to create a scrapbook effect. This piece of work was used through a combination of layering, collaging, cutting and the use of typeface that I created.
